Is Barre Really For Me?

At Tone Barre we firmly believe that Barre is for EVERY BODY and EVERYONE! Exactly as you are in this moment – no need to lose some weight or start to get in shape or buy a new outfit first to fit in. We welcome ALL body types, shapes, sizes, and ability levels through our doors!

Yet for many people scoping us out, they still aren’t sure if barre is for them (so if you’re reading this going “yah actually, I’m one of those people”, then you know you aren’t alone!). How do we know this? From all the phone calls, website chats and emails we get. So we’ve decided it’s time to share with you what we hear, how we feel, and to convince you that barre really is for you AS YOU ARE NOW.

There’s a certain ‘type’ of people of who do barre. I won’t fit in with that crowd.
One of the biggest things that frustrate us is this misconception that you have to be a lean-bean-muscle-machine to be the “barre” type. This couldn’t be further from the truth…especially at Tone Barre. If you can move your body then you are the type of person who can do barre!

I’ve heard Barre is really hard. How should I start to get in shape before I take a class?
You don’t have to go get in shape elsewhere before you try barre! It is totally okay if you haven’t worked out in years and trust us you aren’t the only one starting your fitness journey in this way. As you meet people around the studio we guarantee you will find others who at one point felt exactly like you do right now. Another thing you will discover is that barre is hard for those who have been coming for months or years as well as for those who are new. That’s kind of the beauty of barre – you will never plateau or stop getting stronger.

Plus barre can actually be a really great way to get back “into shape” (quotes because that means something different for each and every person). Barre is a low impact form of exercise, which means it is safer for your joints and can help protect you from getting injured. Tone Barre’s classes in particular focus on building core strength, which is fundamental for any type of exercise. Lastly barre is a total body workout so you won’t be imbalanced and your entire body will be strong.

When are your least busiest class times? I don’t want people to see me trying this.
First, we know stepping out of your comfort zone is hard and intimidating; but, trust us, people in class are too busy focusing on themselves to be judging you during class! We really pride ourselves on a JUDGEMENT FREE ZONE and this includes you judging yourself. Our mantra is to love our bodies and empower one another to feel good about where we are now while setting goals and striving to get to where we want to be in the future.

We also really encourage you to book classes based on your schedule, not ours. The easier it is for you to get to class, the easier it will be for you to stick with your new routine!

I am not coordinated and I am not flexible. Can I even do this?
Yes you can because barre is not a dance, stretching or ballet class. Sure some “elements” of dance and stretching are incorporated into our workouts but that doesn’t mean you have to be a master of those elements to take class!

Am I going to be the only curvy girl in class?
We can’t control who shows up to class but we can tell you that our clients are real women, with real bodies, and real goals. Our clients represent a wide array of body types, athletic ability, age, etc., So no, you aren’t going to be the only curvy girl in our Tone Barre Babe tribe!

I haven’t worked out in years. Will I be able to keep up?
Yes you will be okay we promise – just take class at your own pace! We would be lying if we said you’ll be able to do each move perfectly, but if you listen to your body and go at your own pace, then yes you will make it to the end. And you’ll be proud of yourself when you get there!

Our classes are designed with easier and harder options so you can pick what is best for your body throughout class. For example, take the push up portion of class. You have options to do push ups standing at the barre (just like a standing push up against a wall), on the ground on your knees, or on the ground on your toes. If you have to stand to do push-ups on the barre – IT’S OKAY! Don’t beat yourself up that you aren’t on the floor yet and instead set a goal. Perhaps in 5 classes you are going to try push-ups on the floor. When you do move to push-ups on the floor, don’t focus on a full bend of your elbows. Instead make your range of motion a little smaller until you feel confident you can complete the sequence. Then little by little start to bend your elbows more…and before you know it you’ll be shocking yourself and busting out a push up or two on your toes!

Have we convinced you to try Tone Barre yet?! While we hope the answer is yes, if you are still on the fence please don’t hesitate to reach out to us! Give us a call (and don’t shy away from the voicemail if you miss us because we will call you back!), shoot us an email, or click the little chat button in the bottom right corner below.

We can’t wait to meet you at the barre!

xoxo
